We couldn’t have asked for better weather for our trip to Karangahake Gorge. Clear weather, not too hot, with a great bunch of twenty happy, keen trampers ready to head up and over the 500-metre Mt Karangahake. Quite a few were young, and out for their first of many club tramps.
The weather was so good that one group managed a swim at lunchtime, and another one upon returning to the bus.
Many trampers had driven through the gorge, but never realised the rich history and stunning beauty of the rivers and the vertical rock faces framing both rivers, not to mention the awesome mining tunnels sprinkled with glow-worms that we walked through. It was a magic day.
